ANNIE LENNOX

80s SINGER
Annie Lennox was born on December 25, 1954 in Scotland. She was interested in music at a very early age and her parents realized this and sent her to the Royal Academy of Music in London to study the flute.
Annie was one part of the two part group called Eurythmics. She met the guitarist Dave Stewart while living in London and joined a band named The Tourists who gained success in the U. K. In the late 1970's and the early 1980's. Annie and Dave left the band and formed their duo Eurythmics. The duo disbanded in 1991 when Annie took time off to have a baby. She eventually began work on her solo debut. Annie’s debut album was not released until 1992. She teamed up with Al Green in 1989 and recorded the remake of Put a Little Love in Your Life. She worked solo in the 1990's and gained success with her first solo LP, Diva, which was released in May. Before she went solo, however, Annie received 4 Brit Awards for the Best British Female Artist in 1984, 1986, 1989, and 1990.

As a soloist, Annie seemed to have more of a contemporary adult sound instead of the electronic sounds of the 1980's. She became a success as a soloist with her songs Walking on Broken Glass and Why. Her video interpretations of the songs were also successful. Her LP sold over 2 million copies in the United States and was nominated for 3 Grammy awards one of which was Album of the Year. Her music video for Why also won a MTV Music Award for Best Female Video. The Rolling Stone readers of the Rolling Stone Magazine voted her the Best Female Singer of 1992.

Her album Diva also sold over 2 million copies in the United States. Annie’s singing was not the only talent she had. She was also known for her song writing ability. In 1993 Annie won 2 Brit Awards for the Best Album and the Best Female Artist of the year. In March of 1995 Annie released her second album called Medusa. Annie’s backup singers wore ballet wear or bear suits. Annie sang backup on the Whitney Houston song Step by Step which was used in the movie The Preacher’s Wife. She also sang songs on other soundtracks for Dracula, House of Groove, Apollo 13, and others. Annie won the Brit Award for the Best female Artist in 1997. She accomplished a style of her own that many others wished they had. Annie is keeping a low profile these days because she is taking care of and spending a lot of time with her child. She did contribute a track called Dream Angus to the Carnival compilation to be used to benefit the rainforest. In 1999 Dave Stewart and Annie teamed up again as the Eurythmics and they were awarded the lifetime achievement award for the Outstanding Contribution to the British Music Industry.

MADONNA

80s SINGER

MADONNA after a star reaches a certain point, it's easy to forget what they became famous for and concentrate solely on their persona. Madonna is such a star. Madonna rocketed to stardom so quickly in 1984 that it obscured most of her musical virtues. Appreciating her music became even more difficult as the decade wore on, as discussing her lifestyle became more common than discussing her music. However, one of Madonna's greatest achievements is how she manipulated the media and the public with her music, her videos, her publicity, and her sexuality. Arguably, Madonna was the first female pop star to have complete control of her music and image.

MADONNA moved from her native Michigan to New York in 1977, with dreams of becoming a ballet dancer. She studied with choreographer Alvin Ailey and modeled. In 1979, she became part of the Patrick Hernandez Revue, a disco outfit that had the hit "Born to Be Alive." She traveled to Paris with Hernandez; it was there that she met Dan Gilroy, who would soon become her boyfriend. Upon returning to New York, the pair formed the Breakfast Club, a pop/dance group. Madonna originally played drums for the band, but she soon became the lead singer. In 1980, she left the band and formed Emmy with her former boyfriend, drummer Stephen Bray. Soon, Bray and Madonna broke off from the group and began working on some dance/disco-oriented tracks. A demo tape of these tracks worked its way to Mark Kamins, a New York-based DJ/producer. Kamins directed the tape to Sire Records, which signed the singer in 1982.

Pop music is music charted by the number or sales, plays, etc., that the work receives. It is not a particular genre or style of music, but simply that which is the most popular for the tracked period of time.
Most commercial music of any genre is composed with deliberate intent to appeal to the majority of its contemporaries, but, unless extremely popular in its own genre, it must appeal to a wider audience to appear on the pop charts.

Disco is a genre of dance-oriented music of which the origins are hard to place at a single defining point. In what is considered a forerunner to disco style clubs in February 1970 New York City DJ David Mancuso opened The Loft, a members-only private dance club set in his own home. Most agree that the first disco songs were released in 1973, but some claim Manu Dibango's 1972 Soul Makossa to be the first disco record.
The first article about disco was written in September 1973 by Vince Aletti for Rolling Stone Magazine. In 1974 New York City's WPIX-FM premiered the first disco radio show.
